It is considered normal in many Christian communities for one to say things like, "I am nothing! I am just a lowly sinner, the worst of them all. I am not worthy. I can't do anything right." Well, I want to challenge that. Yes, it is true that we are unworthy of God's gift of His son, His love, grace, kindness, mercy-- the list goes on and on. But remember that Jesus is a game changer.
Yes, we are unworthy, lowly, sinners in our flesh, but when we accept the free gift of God's son we are reborn into a life of worth. If you haven't accepted the gift of Jesus because of your "unworthiness," frankly you need to get over yourself. The gift has already been given regardless of your worth and to not accept is just plain stupid. That's like refusing a free car because you have no money to purchase it! So when we do accept Jesus, His perfection covers our imperfections. Now, we are seen by the Father through the lens of His son.
If you like to go around and talk about how lowly you are I'd like to tell you-- you are wrong. Jesus changes everything. In Him, our entire identity is changed. The slate is washed clean. Never forget the extravagant gift you've been given, but never deny your worth in the Father's eyes. We once were sinners, but now we are saints.
1 Corinthians 1:28-30 God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God. God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. (NLT)
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. (NLT)
John 15:5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. (ESV)
2 Corinthians 3:18 So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord--who is the Spirit--makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image. (NLT)
2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (ESV)
