When we attend a contemporary church service, the first thing most of them do is have worship together. The congregation may stand up, sing, kneel, clap, or raise their hands during this time. But what does this all mean? Why do we worship? Let's not just go through the motions, let's seek to understand why we do the things we do.
First of all, we worship before a message at church so that we can ready our hearts to receive what the Lord wants to tell us through our pastor. The act of worship is turning our attention on the greatness of our God. It is reminding us of how wonderful He is. It is laying every burden aside to trust Him with our lives. When we are truly worshipping, the posture of our heart is changed to thanksgiving and praise towards the Lord. When we start from that place, we are much more apt to receive His word.
Worship is not a performance. It is not who has the best voice, dance moves, or raises their hands the longest that dictates the sincerity of our worship. It is a highly personal time with Jesus where you can be free to get excited and react to Him in whatever way you feel comfortable. When we are worshipping, we should not be concentrating on how others are worshipping around us. This is the time to turn off your mind to everything and everybody but Jesus and His magnificence. You'll be surprised at how wonderful that feels.
Worship is reconnecting our Spirits with Jesus and reminding ourselves of His greatness. Do not pass up another opportunity to turn your heart to Him in worship. Just shut out the world and take in His glory. Simply sit at the throne of the King in awe and wonder.
Psalm 95:6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! (ESV)
Isaiah 12:5 Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be made known in all the earth. (ESV)
Luke 4:8 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’” (ESV)
Psalm 95:1-6 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. (ESV)
