Enjoy Him

Sometimes my mind gets full with what I need to do-- school, work, ministry, chores, exercise, etc. During these periods, I am always thinking about what I need to get done next. Any free time I have I plan to use effectively to accomplish all the things on my plate. Yet when I try to finish all that needs doing, I find my mind unable to concentrate! As a result, I feel even further behind and more guilty about how I am using my time.

This kind of thing is normal with the busy American lifestyle. It's easy to feel pressure to get a lot done in little time. Our time on this earth is limited and important, but we need to be able to enjoy it as well! Jesus didn't intend for us to be constantly working with no enjoyment. Sometimes we get caught up in the busyness and forget to take a breath. We work hard while looking ahead at the benefits and forget to enjoy right now. This can even apply to ministry! Sometimes I find myself so worried about something I need to prepare for that it takes all the enjoyment right out of it and I miss the right now. There is no better example of this than Jesus' time with Martha.

Luke 10:38-42 As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” (NLT)

Martha's heart was in the right place. She wanted to take care of Jesus by serving Him and feeding Him. Sadly, in the process she was losing out on the opportunity to just sit and enjoy Jesus and fellowship. Sometimes the best thing we can do is just relax and fellowship. Let Jesus speak to us, directly or through time spend with Christian friends. He will bring revelations and rest for your weary mind and give you the strength to continue on with exuberance. When we concentrate on Him, He will make everything come together for us no matter how busy we are!

Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (NIV)

I encourage you today to cast your burdens aside and trust in Him. Take time to rest in His presence and let Him restore your mind. He longs for your love and attention and the works will follow. Don't miss an opportunity to just enjoy your Savior, Creator, the lover of your soul. You'll be surprised how much better equipped you are to face the busyness when you rest in His arms.

Listen Up

Is Jesus talking to you? I hear many people wonder how to hear God's voice and what to listen for. I want to offer a bit of wisdom on the topic. If you are wondering if God is talking to you, the answer is yes. We were designed to have a relationship with our creator and He is always there trying to get ahold of you if you'll only pay a little attention.     How does God communicate with us? The first way is through His word. Those are direct words from God Himself, written through His people. The Bible is our instruction manual to life. Whatever difficulty we may be facing, there is always an answer in scripture. God, having known every need before we ever needed it, has already provided an answer. 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness (ESV)     The second way God communicates with us is by talking directly to us. Just like Adam and Eve spok...

Dancing Through the Fire

For a couple weeks now the Lord has been pressing this message on my heart. He revealed a flaw in my thinking I hadn't noticed. You see, when hard times come it's in my nature to duck and cover. I go into "survival mode" and I get tunnel vision. I only focus on getting through what's in front of me alive. But in doing so, not only do I miss a lot of opportunities, but I give in to the voice of fear in my life.     I know I don't speak only for myself when I say that God wants to us in our "every day lives." Not only at church or on a special mission trip, but in the trenches of the grocery store, the gym, work, etc. It is His will that every soul is saved and He wants us to go out into the world and win those hearts for Him. But when I put myself in survival mode, I block out all the opportunities God lays before me. When I numb myself with the routine of each passing day, week, and month, I miss out on sharing the one thing of eternal importa...

How Firm a Foundation

Matthew 7:24-27 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” Luke 6:46-49 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against th...
