When we decide to follow Jesus, we become citizens of Heaven and not of this earth. Though we live here, we are brought into a Kingdom ruled by Jesus and not by man. We are called to live under the laws of His perfect Kingdom and not by the ways of man. At the same time, however, we are to be in the world amongst those not living by His word. Our duty is to introduce them to our King and be an example of His Kingdom on earth. In other words, we are to be in the world but not of it. What does that look like?
Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (ESV)
1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. (ESV)
John 12:46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. (ESV)
John 8:12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (ESV)
Deuteronomy 30:19-20 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. (NIV)
John 17:16 They are not of the world, as I am not of the world. (HCSB)
Are you swayed by the opinions and lawlessness of the world? Do you find yourself justifying sin as the world does, instead of walking in the righteousness we are told about in scripture? It is easy to pick apart the Bible and say that some things are not applicable today. I must remind you that when you said "yes" to Jesus, you signed up to believe in what He says in His word. It is an all or nothing deal. Live for Jesus or don't.
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness (ESV)
If you decide to live for Him, then you have signed up to be a world changer. That means that you become so in love with Jesus and trust completely in His words that you want to share that with everyone around you. When you really know Jesus well, it is tragic to see others living without Him. Such is the design of Christianity-- we meet Jesus, we fall in love with Him, we have compassion for others who don't know Him and seek to change that.
Do NOT settle for lukewarm Christianity, caught in the tug-of-war between the world and Heaven. Choose Jesus. Choose life. Ask yourself, is the world changing you, or are you changing the world? It starts with us.
Revelation 3:15-16 I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. (ESV)
