Under the Surface

Sometimes we see someone and we cannot help but wonder why they do the things they do. We judge them based on their behavior, words, appearance, etc. We've all done it; admit it. But this is not the proper response to others, whether they be unbelievers or Christians.

Let's think about this concept in application to nonbelievers. Our whole duty as a Christ follower is to introduce others to Him. We are meant to disciple the nations. How can we do this when we sit back and judge everyone? We judge by the sinfulness we see and view others as tainted or unworthy of our friendship. We don't dare get our hands dirty with people who do thinkg we disagree with (*gasp*). Today I'd like to remind you of how Jesus regarded those same people.

Matthew 28:19-20 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (NIV)

Jesus loved the worst kinds of sinners. He hung out with those that society had rejected and He was ridiculed for it. But like Jesus said, the healthy do not need a doctor, but rather the sick (Luke 5:31). Have you ever considered that those who are most difficult to love are most in need of it?

Love changes everything. This is why Jesus told us that as His people, we are to be recognized by our love for one another (John 13:35). We need to get past what we see and remind ourselves that there is a deeper reason behind what we see. People act the way they do because of what they are feeling deep in their hearts. When Jesus looked into the crowds, He was moved with compassion. Start looking at things differently.

Before you judge someone, consider that there is something deeper lingering behind the surface, unseen. Consider the condition of their heart and have compassion. Today, show some unconditional, Jesus love to those who desperately need it.

1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” (ESV)

James 4:12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? (ESV)

Seeing by Faith

When we are trying to live by faith, the things that inhibit us are the things that are right under our noses. We are trained to live based on the things around us. We don't believe anything if we don't see proof of it. The things around us are more our reality than what we say we believe in. But the Bible tells us that we are to walk by faith and not by sight. We are to live based on what we know is truth, not by what we see.     The things we see around us distract us from the reality we should be living in. What is unseen is eternal and more important than the things of this world. We need to fix our eyes on what is lasting and know the difference. We need to be filling ourselves with the word and not the world. When we are distracted by the world, we forget the truth. We become discouraged and doubt our faith. We need to draw strength from one another so that we may run the race with endurance.     What is determining your reality today? Is i...

Think Twice

When the Holy Spirit was sent to us on earth, it made Jesus readily available to all. Now He lives in us, not among us. When you are a born again Christian, you now have Jesus dwelling inside you. How does that affect your daily life? Do you realize that you are a reflection of the one you carry with you everywhere you go?    Sadly, that doesn't mean much to a lot of Christians. Instead of using Jesus as an instrument of love, hope, and salvation, they use His name as a weapon. They spend their time boycotting instead of praying for Jesus to change hearts. Telling others that the God who IS love, hates them. Letting others know that they will go to hell for their decisions, instead of lighting the way to heaven. Let me be clear: this is wrong! No one wants to believe in a hateful, unforgiving God. I certainly don't. That's why I follow Jesus.     Even if you aren't the one openly boycotting on street corners, be careful of the image of God you are g...

Pergamum

Revelation 2:13-16  “I know that you live in the city where Satan has his throne, yet you have remained loyal to me. You refused to deny me even when Antipas, my faithful witness, was martyred among you there in Satan’s city. “But I have a few complaints against you. You tolerate some among you whose teaching is like that of Balaam, who showed Balak how to trip up the people of Israel. He taught them to sin by eating food offered to idols and by committing sexual sin. In a similar way, you have some Nicolaitans among you who follow the same teaching. Repent of your sin, or I will come to you suddenly and fight against them with the sword of my mouth." (NLT)     To the church in Pergamum, Jesus commends them for their faithfulness. Interesting that what He told the church in Smyrna they were doing wrong was just what those in Pergamum were doing right! They lived in an area that made it particularly difficult to stay devoted to Christ because of all the persecution, yet...
