When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we are filled with love and compassion for God's people just like Jesus was when He walked the earth. He saw people and was moved by the Holy Spirit to help them. So how do we know if we really are filled with the love of God as we should be? Love results in action. Love isn't just telling others how much you care-- it is actively being involved in people's lives and helping out where you see an opportunity. When you see a need in someone's life who you care about, you cannot help but get involved because of the love in your heart for them. That is the attitude we should always have with the community of Christ. When we are in step with the Holy Spirit He will not only fill us with love and compassion for people, but will prompt action to back that up.
1 John 3:16-18 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. (NIV)
Matthew 9:36-37 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few." (NIV)
