Common Ground

In the body of Christ, we should not be looking at the little issues that divide us, but at the God who unites us. Many believers focus so much on the differences between us all. They look at denominations and judge which one they like best and why. They look down on those who are outside of what they have deemed right, but this is the way of the world. No matter who is "right," none of us who truly follow Jesus should be acting this way. Jesus is not a God of division, but of unity. He wants us all as the body of Christ to function as one unit.

In the days of the Bible, the division was between Jews and Greeks. They each had slightly different ways of doing things and there was strife between the two groups because of that. Each believed their way superior. We need to recognize that everyone has their own way to glorify God and it can look different from country to country, city to city, culture to culture. As long as it is Biblically correct, who can say what is the right way?

However, if a "denomination" or group of believers is doing something that isn't Biblically sound, is the way to change it to fight about it? To draw the line in the sand and point out all they are doing wrong? Absolutely not! The best way is to love those people and focus on what we do have in common-- Jesus Christ. When we keep loving and pointing others to Him, He tends to work out those minor details. We teach on Him and speak about Him and let Him do the dirty work. Unless your brother comes to you asking for your outlook or you are clearly being prompted by the Holy Spirit, do not reprimand Him for his ways. It is this that causes division in the body.

Stop focusing on the little things that the world does. Campaigning for a change in one small detail is not worth the division it causes. Campaign for Jesus and all the details will work themselves out. Trust Jesus to set things straight, for He is the One who ultimately sets the truth straight. Focus on the common ground of Jesus Christ; this is how we will change the world.

Romans 10:12-13 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (ESV)

1 Corinthians 1:10-13 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? (ESV)

Titus 3:9-11 But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned. (ESV)

Ephesians 4:3-6 Eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (ESV)

Luke 11:17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls." (ESV)

He Time

We have now gone over me time and we time, so today I want to address He time. It's a pretty simple concept-- that we have to spend time with Jesus to grow our faith. Just like anything else we want to get better at, you have to spend time doing it. In the case of Christianity, we are changed into the image of Jesus as we spend time with Him. 2 Corinthians 3:18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. (ESV)     My message is as simple as this-- make sure that you are setting time aside for Christ. You will never change if you don't continually immerse yourself into His presence. We need to be spending time in His word so we know His promises and guidelines for our life, in prayer to speak to Him for individual direction in our circumstances, and worshipping Him for His goodness.     Do not le...

The Path to Life

Through this most recent season in life, God has been teaching me what it truly means to follow His plans for my life. Over the last year or so,  I have had to make some of the most ''adult" decisions in my life so far. Through that process, I have had to rely heavily on faith and the leading of the Holy Spirit to discern which is the right way to go. It has been a challenge for me, a planner to the core, to put my trust fully in God's plans and leading even when I am unable to see what's ahead and I am glad to say I have come out having learned a few things.      The main takeaway I would like to share is this: the right way is not the easiest way . That probably sounds very obvious if you have spent any time in church, but I never thought about that principle carrying over into walking out God's plans for my life. You see, there have been decisions that I have made over the last year that I was certain were what God was leading me to do. An...

Think Twice

When the Holy Spirit was sent to us on earth, it made Jesus readily available to all. Now He lives in us, not among us. When you are a born again Christian, you now have Jesus dwelling inside you. How does that affect your daily life? Do you realize that you are a reflection of the one you carry with you everywhere you go?    Sadly, that doesn't mean much to a lot of Christians. Instead of using Jesus as an instrument of love, hope, and salvation, they use His name as a weapon. They spend their time boycotting instead of praying for Jesus to change hearts. Telling others that the God who IS love, hates them. Letting others know that they will go to hell for their decisions, instead of lighting the way to heaven. Let me be clear: this is wrong! No one wants to believe in a hateful, unforgiving God. I certainly don't. That's why I follow Jesus.     Even if you aren't the one openly boycotting on street corners, be careful of the image of God you are g...
