Present of the Present

Jesus often gives us a glimpse into our future. Maybe He gives us promises of salvation or reconciliation or an idea of where our calling will take us. Whatever He gives us, it is easy to put our focus on that. I tend to try taking steps to make those things happen or become stir crazy just waiting with those things on my mind.

The point of those glimpses Jesus gives us is to propel us forward. He encourages us that things won't always be the way they are now, that He has a big plan for our life, etc. Whatever it may be, it is to drive us increasingly towards Him. I challenge you to take heart from His encouragement and be focused on what is in front of you today. We tend to believe that it is up to us to put in the work to get to the places we want to be, but in reality Jesus does all of the work behind the scenes to get us where He wants us to be. We should not be wasting time focused on the future, but instead we should enjoy what He has for us now.

Wherever we are on our spiritual journey with Jesus, we have to learn to be content. We should be content in the waiting and trust Jesus to handle what He has already promised. Be content in the difficult times because we will face many throughout this life. We waste our time and energy being dissatisfied with the present or trying to make things work on our own. Accept what is going on in your life in the present and look for Jesus in it. Where is He wanting your attention today? On the future? Or on Him?

Philippians 4:11-12 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. (ESV)

Hebrews 13:5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (ESV)

Seeing by Faith

When we are trying to live by faith, the things that inhibit us are the things that are right under our noses. We are trained to live based on the things around us. We don't believe anything if we don't see proof of it. The things around us are more our reality than what we say we believe in. But the Bible tells us that we are to walk by faith and not by sight. We are to live based on what we know is truth, not by what we see.     The things we see around us distract us from the reality we should be living in. What is unseen is eternal and more important than the things of this world. We need to fix our eyes on what is lasting and know the difference. We need to be filling ourselves with the word and not the world. When we are distracted by the world, we forget the truth. We become discouraged and doubt our faith. We need to draw strength from one another so that we may run the race with endurance.     What is determining your reality today? Is i...

Think Twice

When the Holy Spirit was sent to us on earth, it made Jesus readily available to all. Now He lives in us, not among us. When you are a born again Christian, you now have Jesus dwelling inside you. How does that affect your daily life? Do you realize that you are a reflection of the one you carry with you everywhere you go?    Sadly, that doesn't mean much to a lot of Christians. Instead of using Jesus as an instrument of love, hope, and salvation, they use His name as a weapon. They spend their time boycotting instead of praying for Jesus to change hearts. Telling others that the God who IS love, hates them. Letting others know that they will go to hell for their decisions, instead of lighting the way to heaven. Let me be clear: this is wrong! No one wants to believe in a hateful, unforgiving God. I certainly don't. That's why I follow Jesus.     Even if you aren't the one openly boycotting on street corners, be careful of the image of God you are g...

How Firm a Foundation

Matthew 7:24-27 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” Luke 6:46-49 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against th...
